English Bulldog Name

The origin of the word is medieval, referring not only to the robust look of the dog, but also to the strength with which it attacked bulls in combats. The ancestors of the breed are Asiatic mastiffs, but it was developed in Great Britain. Another theory of these dogs’ origin is that the breed appeared as a result of crossbreeding the large Mastiff and the Pug Dog. Originally, these dogs were bred to guard, control and bait bulls. The first British standard for the current dog of this breed was written in 1864. The fighting instinct was successfully bred out leaving such traits as loyalty, tenacity and courage.

The dog is wide and compact in appearance, with massive, broad head, stocky legs, and short tail. The shorthaired coat may be any color except of black. The muzzle is short, with skin falling in dense folds, the lower jaw should be undershot. These dogs’ nose is flat and black, and the eyes are distinctively large, dark and round, the cheeks are soft and wrinkled, and the upper lip is pendent. The ears are small and rose-shaped and the tail is short and carried low. These dogs usually measure 12-16 inches high at the withers, although actually, there is no fixed height.
