The direct ancestry of this breed is still not clear. What most breed historians do agree is the origin of the breed’s name. Bulldogs received their name due to the fact that they were used to guard, control and bait bulls. Males of the breed weigh 53-55 pounds; females’ weight ranges from 49 to 51 pounds. Males grow to a height of 12-15 inches. There is no concrete height for females but they are normally shorter than males. An average litter size in the breed is 4-5 puppies. As these dogs have very large head, females often need a caesarian section.
