The breed’s origins are said to come from the Alaunts and Pugnaces of ancient England - the present-day Mastiff and the Pug. Producers of the breed changed the dog’s appearance extremely and as the result, the breed has a number of physical traits that are detrimental to the dog's health. The general appearance and attitude of the dogs of this breed should suggest vigor, stability and great strength. These dogs are stocky animals standing 13-15 inches and weighing about 40-50 pounds. One of the main characteristics of the breed is a large heavy head with a protruding lower jaw and a short muzzle.
