In the end of the 19th century when bull baiting was prohibited these dogs had to be changed or become extinct. People started breeding these dogs for exhibition. Their tenacity and strength were retained, but physical appearance changed: the dogs became shorter, with larger heads and not so muscular. Their temperament improved; they became kind, pacific and dignified dogs with equable disposition.

These dogs are easy to groom due to the short coat. They are not very active in adulthood and should be kept indoors, because heat and chill are bad for them. The breed is very friendly and peaceful; these dogs will never start fighting with other pets unless there is a good reason for that. Dogs of this breed can suffer from such typical diseases as hip dysplasia, poor eyesight, and skin problems. Like all dogs, these one need daily walks, but their exercise needs are rather low and some of these dogs create the impression of being lazy, however, it is not really so.
