The loose skin forms many wrinkles over the head. Usual problems associated with the breed are: drooling, snorring, fragile bones, hip dysplasia, skin diseases, eye and breath disorders, and difficulties giving birth. The original purpose of these dogs was big animals baiting; after the prohibition of this sport the breed was threatened by extinction, but enthusiastic breeders preserved it and altered its features.
