The origin of the breed is still not very clear. A conventional opinion is that the breed was a mere by-product of the English breeding. Small, undeveloped species with erect ears were not a success in England though the French welcomed those dogs. The dogs have never been bred for one purpose only; either it was fighting or hunting large game. However, history shows that the dog was a frequent competitor in dog fighting. To be a success in this sort of sports, the dog had to be courageous and determined.

These dogs possess a very steady temperament and friendly nature, but they are not suited for any family. This breed needs minimal exercise, but should be taken outdoors every day. These dogs are capable of moving very quickly, but only for short periods of time. Some Bulldogs don’t like taking any exercise; others are full of energy. The owner should be very careful when training the dog, especially puppy, because its bones and joints are prone to injuries.
