The species are found in open woodlands as they avoid dense forests as well as in the coniferous swamps and clear cuts. The home range of the animal is about 600 square miles. The animals are not strictly territorial and can be seen fighting only during a mating season. Elk antlers are a good hunting trophy and breeding farms may offer babies.
