These birds have a rather high reproductive range and can breed as yearlings. Males usually leave the hens soon after mating occurs, but in some species, both parents participate in raising the young. There are usually 9-13 eggs in a clutch. Right after hatching, the hen leads the ducklings to water and doesn’t return to the nest. Older and more experienced hens have lower duckling mortality than yearlings. Birds of this family can be found in a wide range of habitats close to water sourses.

The birds are found near woodlands on quiet waters such as swamps, flooded forests, ponds, small rivers and marshes. The birds build nests in a tree cavity or in the cavities that has been used by other birds. The mortality of adult birds every year is about 50%. These birds protected in Idaho where there are specially made nests for them; they use the nests and are absent from southern Idaho. These birds are 10-21 inches (43-52 cm) of size and the males are usually brightly colored. The usual pattern of the feathers is patches of green, white and purple; throat and breast are chestnut.
