Domestic ducks are not as popular as the chicken, because they don’t have white lean meat and need special conditions. On the other hand, ducks are easier to keep, if they have access to water. They can be kept free range or in cages. To be healthy, they need fresh water and enough room. Females of most domestic ducks are unreliable at raising their young, but ducklings rely on the mother for a supply of preen oil, which makes them waterproof. If the ducklings are kept free range and have access to water, it’s not recommended to use a hen to substitute the mother duck.
