Doves are monogamous, and both parents take part in the incubation and weaning the young. Males sit on eggs from 10.00 p.m. till about 5.00 a.m. The parents feed the hatchlings on a crop secretion called ‘pigeon milk’, which is not actually milk as it does not contain lactose.

Pigeons reach maturity at about 6 months of age. Adults start building nests right after mating, and females lay their first egg about 10 days after mating.
