The breed is actually very strong and the physical qualities and personality traits of the hound allowed it to be used in innumerous activities. Therefore, breeders stressed their strength and good temperament qualities rather than appearance. By the middle of the 19th century, the breed was widely spread in France.

Also called French Mastiff.
However, the breed was not yet well developed. Hounds were of different sizes and color patterns. Some hounds had scissors bite, whereas others --undershot. In 1963, a hound named Magentas won a show held in Paris. It represented a group of hounds that had same general type.
