The breed does suffer from illnesses and people involved in breeding should be aware of the inherited problems common in the breed. Like all large breeds, they are prone to bloat, hip and elbow dysplasia, and other disorders. They can also suffer from cancer and eyelid problems.

When buying a puppy, check if the parents have been screened prior to breeding and if the puppy has a good background. Pet quality puppies should be spayed/neutered according to contracts.
