In France, farmers employed Pyr’s protecting instincts and physical attributes for flock guarding. Later, the dogs were used by the rich for estate protection. The first dogs appeared in the United States in the 19th century, yet selective breeding started only in 1931 with the establishment of the famous Basquaerie Kennels.
