It is claimed that this breed of dogs originated in France in the 1500s. It was developed by French nobility to hunt rabbit, hare, and other small game. The dog’s body is shaped specially to help it hunt. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1885.

The dog normally measures 13-15 inches and weighs about 40-60 pounds. It has long, hanging ears that are not altered. The ears are functional and help to gather the scent into the nose while tracking. These dogs are good-natured and easy going.
