Britain has used working canines for centuries. From Roman Empire occupation to present day, herding breeds always “pushed” livestock over terrain. These early canines displayed an instinct to herd, they were often large, powerful, rough with the stock and difficult to control. The need for a more versatile canine grew.

Small farmers who could not afford to keep several canines required one that could hunt and sniff out sheep, and with a keen eye. Breeds were introduced into herding canines and, eventually, a breed possessing quick movement, a canny livestock sense, and a temperament sensitive to the owner’s will, developed. Herding dogs are a favorite of breeders who love to show their pictures.
