Every dog deserves dog treats once in awhile. Make certain that the treats you are giving to them are not harmful. Some dog owners offer their dogs chocolate, and the pet owners regret it later on. Once your dog finishes a bone, the individual bits and pieces left over are thick with saliva and slime, and they can slide down your dog's throat and cause severe, life-threatening choking. If you give your dog a treat without thinking, he could end up with a smattering of health problems that are hard to overcome.

Dog treats like milk bones resemble sweet treats like little cookies. The dogs have strengthened jaws and chewing muscles without the anxiety of a possible choking episode to match. Rawhide bones and sticks are a particular favorite. Try to place limits on the rawhide you give your dog because too much can hurt their little stomachs.

Dog treats should be served when the dog behaves in a positive manner. This will re-enforce their positive behavior and make it more likely that it will take place again. Don't give the treats every time because the dog will expect one each time he does the particular behavior. Don't give your dog treats when he barks at strangers because of the aforementioned reward philosophy.

Give a treat if you walk the dog, and the dog does not pull you or jerk you around. The dog will quickly learn that these treats are for when they do well and don't give problems. Give your dog treats because you want him to be friendlier too. Dog treats are meat-based, and they shouldn't have too many preservatives, artificial sweeteners, or additional elements that are bad for a dog's metabolism.
