This is the breed that was used for on small hill farms and is rather strong though they are small. These horses also served with the Army as pack and Mountain Artillery horses. They are rather small being about 14 h.h. to 14.2 h.h.

The usual coloring of the horse is predominantly black, with some brown, bay grey, and rarely roan. There can also be white markings on the coat. These horses are very intelligent and have tremendous stamina, an iron constitution, and high courage, combined with a calm temperament.
