These dogs originated in Scotland and were used there for herding, guarding, and as companions. They were so intelligent that became widely spread and triggered the attention of many famous people including the royalty. The name is believed to stem from a black0faced sheep “Colley.”

Also called Rough Collie, Smooth Collie.
Once they started to take part in conformation, they started to be divided into show and working dogs. Show bloodlines are believed to have some Borzoi genes. The American Kennel Club distinguishes between two varieties: smooth- and rough-coated dogs.
