These horses can grow to over 18 hands tall. Mature horses weigh between 1600 and 2400 pounds. A white blaze face and four white legs are common in the breed. The horses are usually bay or brown but can be also black or sorrel.

Originally, they were developed for use in warfare to carry armor into battle. They originated from Scottish farm horses over two hundred years ago.
