The breed has a square body build, flat head with wrinkles, broad muzzle, small almond-shaped eyes, and black/blue tongue and lips. The coat may be smooth or rough, with well-developed undercoat for good isolation. The tail curves over the back.

In the past, the breed was used as a utility dog and functions as a pet at present. They may be slightly difficult to train since they are dominant and seem to please themselves first rather than the owner.
