There is a type of the breed that is called the Miniature type; that should stand 17 inches at the withers. A bigger size is a disqualification. This size comes from a recessive gene in the DNA. Breeders are working on making the recessive gene dominate in this type in order to insure the desirable small size in these dogs.

However, some breeders who aim at getting the Miniature type, fail to make a difference between the Miniature type and the Chinese dog, who is small due to some disease such as kidney disorder or heart disease.
