If you keep an animal at home the cages are recommended to be made of welded wire mesh at least 16g in thickness, with the holes no larger than 1.9 cm (3/4 inch) square. The animals’ nutrition consists of pellets, fresh, clean, dry hay and fresh water.

These animals are native to the Andes Mountains and have evolved to survive in an environment where the land is dry and water is scarce. Their coat is thought to be developed in order to survive the frigid temperatures in the mountains. The large ears are adept for their acute sense of hearing.
