Chinchilla Cages
There are various kinds of Chinchilla cages for sale, and they feature numerous facilities and toys for pets to entertain themselves. Chinchillas, being popular pets, require lots of care and proper shelter. Chinchillas are very intelligent; hence, they need something to use their intelligence on. These animals appreciate space, and this must be a guiding point in choosing the best chinchilla cage for your pet.
The minimum space requirement for Chinchilla cages is usually around 24 by 24 inches. Chinchillas enjoy climbing so it is recommended to purchase tall multi-story cages with ladders and ramps. Chinchilla cages can also be equipped with tubes, ducts, and wheels. Wheels and balls are excellent exercise tools - to which Chinchillas are known to show particular liking. It is recommended that you have solid surfaces with 13-15-inch wheels and plastic balls. Wire wheels are uncomfortable for Chinchillas because their legs and tails may get stuck between the wires. A "hide-away bo" where your Chinchilla can take a nap is another necessary item for your pet's well-being.
It is highly recommended to purchase chinchilla cages with feeders attached to cage walls and hopper-style feeders. Small dishes are no great advantage because Chinchillas can easily tip them over. There must also be a constant supply of water. You can use plastic or glass bottles with metal drinking nozzles. If you intend to keep a plastic bottle inside a chinchilla cage, it should be encased in wire mesh to prevent access by the animal.
Chinchillas chew on everything they can get to, to say nothing of their own cages. Therefore, plastic cages and accessories (except for the aforementioned rolling balls) are in no way suitable for them. Wire cages are most preferable for Chinchillas. Chinchilla cages with wire floor are helpful in keeping the animal's legs clean, but there should be a wooden plate partially covering the floor in order to give a Chinchilla's feet a rest. Wire floor cages have pull-out trays, which facilitate cleaning. Trays can be strewn with pieces of newspapers or sawdust; do not use Cedar or Pine shavings because they are highly conducive to respiratory problems, liver diseases and allergies in Chinchillas.
With the market so fluid and diverse, choosing a comfortable chinchilla cage for your pet is simple. Considering the Chinchilla's inquisitive and curious nature, as well as their infinite love for space, it is advisable to buy the largest and best equipped cage you can afford. Place your cage in cool, dry and ventilated (but not drafty!) areas because Chinchillas are susceptible to heat strokes. Keep your pets safe from stress, and do not expose them to direct sunlight. Prices depend on the type and size of the cage. You can either purchase a cage at your local pet store or have it custom-crafted according to your preferences. Good chinchilla cages usually go for between $100 and $200.
