Technically, a mixed breed is the offspring of two different purebred dogs. The mating of a purebred and a mixed breed results in a litter of mongrels. And finally, if both parents are either mixed breeds or mongrels, the pups are mutts. Such dogs combine the features of their parents and each one is unique. In fact, most breeds were developed from mixed species. For instance, the dog being described descended from the ancient Techichi dog that was crossed with some small dog that arrived in Mexico with Chinese immigrants. Sometimes it takes more than two breeds for a particular breed to develop. Breeds are usually picked up in such a way as to combine the best qualities of all the breeds being involved in the project. It can take several generations of inbreeding to achieve permanency in appearance and temperament.
