Toy lapdogs, Chihuahuas are fragile little canines that make wonderful family pets. These tiny dogs weigh from one to three kilograms, and reach less than 20cm in height. Their characteristic features are large erect ears, sparkling black eyes, and a moderately long tail. The dog’s coat may be either smooth or long. Chihuahua owners describe their dogs as very smart, cunning, and highly protective. They tend to become very attached to their owners and reserved around strangers. Training does not present difficulties.

Techichi dogs, the ancestors of modern Chihuahuas, were popular pets and worshipped animals among the Toltecs and the Aztecs. The breed originated in the Chihuahua state of Mexico and dates back to the 9th century. A soft spot on the head (molera) was considered to be a sign of purity. Today’s dogs of this breed saved this feature, but some lay people believe it is a sign of hydrocephalia. The dogs vary in weight from 1 to 6 pounds; pet quality animals may be larger.
