The name of the breed indicates that it came from Mexico and was derived from an earlier breed Tochichi, which was popular among the Toltecs about the 7th century. The Aztecs worshipped these animals and believed they had a power to lead the dead through the underworld. A soft spot on the head (molera) typical for the breed was considered to be a sign of purity. Aztecs considered this molera to be a sign of purity and worshipped such dogs; today, some lay people and even vets consider it to be a sign of hydrocephalia.
