Breeding chihuahua dog types will usually produce a healthy dog with puppies that are of a show quality.
Purebred dogs of this breed cannot be cheap, because raising the pups and giving birth are very complicated, especially if the bitch is rather small. Show quality dogs reach up to $1000, and even more if they have a rare coat color. Some breeders claim that they have only a teacup variety of dogs. Such kennels should not be trusted, because there is no such a variety within the breed. Very small puppies may occur in any litter; they are just premature and very fragile.

This breed is notoriously fragile and requires very careful handling. It is not advisable to buy such a dog if you have small children or larger dogs in your house. This dog is an excellent companion for elderly people and can be a great therapy dog. Because puppies have large heads, births often require Caesarian sections. Puppies have soft spots on top of the skull that usually close by adulthood. However, in some dogs, these gaps (moleras) remain open for the rest of the life.
