Like all small breeds these dogs usually live up to 16-18 years and remain active for the most of their lives. The breed is rather hardy, but there exist several genetic diseases it is susceptible to. Their bones can be fragile and joints can be weak and susceptible to fractures. They should not be allowed to jump high and should be handled with care. Some dogs are born with a soft spot on the head (molera,) which may not fully close. This condition is normal and doesn’t mean any disease.

Baby Chihuahua Picture -

Because these dogs are very delicate, they should not be trusted with small children or larger dogs. In fact, these little creatures are very protective around their owners and usually hate other dogs. They are snappy with teasing children and may bite. Being the smallest dogs in the world, they think of themselves as the largest ones on earth! These dogs are relatively friendly with representatives of their own breed. However, well socialized dogs can get along with other canine and non-canine animals. They are great companions for elderly people and can be excellent therapy dogs.
