Purebred dogs of this breed are very adaptable to any lifestyle and trainable. They make smart family companions and alarm dogs, therapy animals for the elderly people, loyal friends for small children. Provided with special classes they may become champions in various competitions. They are very successful in obedience, conformation, agility and tracking. Every dog should have at least basic obedience course to become a pleasant and safe member of the family. If you take a puppy home before it is 8 weeks old, it may be difficult to socialize.

At times, these dogs can be difficult to train, because they are proud and have a stubborn streak. Although they are small and cute, they can be willful and you should not let them get away with unpleasant behavior. They must be taught not to bark a lot and require regular socialization. Socialization is crucial for would-be show dogs, because they tend to be suspicious of other dogs and should be trained not to display downright hatred of other canines. In order to prevent ahoraphobia, an abnormal fear of open spaces and crowds, they must be regularly exposed to such places.
