Before breeding, a bitch should be in a good state and well fed, because fit dogs return easier to the same state after the puppies are born. The food intake should be increased to 5-10% and milk and meat should be added. A good quality puppy food providing an increased level of protein is ideal in this time. During the last stages of the gestation period, more frequent feedings in smaller amounts should be provided to avoid discomfort that larger meals may cause.
