These dogs have a general appearance of graceful, alert, and active animals with a saucy and peaceful expression. They originated in Mexico in the state with the same name and their origin goes back to the 9th century, to the time of the Aztecs and Toltecs. However, those were not exactly the dogs they are today, but very similar. Archaeologists have discovered a lot of their skeletons in ancient graves. Most probably, they were believed to possess a sacred power to guide the dead through the underworld and were buried together with their dead owners.
