This breed makes perfect lap dogs; they are very intelligent and loyal, require little place and are happy with little exercises. The doggy smell is absent in this breed, but they shed a lot twice a year, especially the longhaired type. There is much controversy about the origin of the breed, but they are believed to have descended from ancient dogs of Aztecs and Toltecs, who had similar appearance and who were involved in ancient rituals. Archaeologists have found numerous ancient human graves with skeletons of these dogs placed in them.
