These animals are now endangered; for a long time they have been killed by people for their fur. Some time ago they inhabited an area from North Africa to India. Unfortunately nowadays they are commonly found only in sub-Saharan Africa.

In the wild these animals inhabit sparse sub-desert, steppe, medium and long grass plains. There should be bushes, tall grass and other large plants on their territory to hide from predators. They need a camp which is about 9 hectare in area.
