| American Cocker Spaniel: | American Cocker Spaniels are one of the most beloved pooch breeds in American history, pop culture, and family homes. Their appeal is manifold and widespread across the world as well. Brought to America by Englishmen in the latter 19th century, they quickly caught on as indisputably lovable little pooches. Being the smallest of the sporting dogs made them admirable to both men and women. Husbands use them to scare up prey from the dense brush, and women are fond of their sweet look, stature, and mild temperament. It’s not surprising because they’re animated, merry, light-hearted, and high-spirited. The captivating countenances of the dog are indelibly delightful. They’re very charming, even endearing.
The coats of the American Cocker Spaniel are satiny, cottony, and very profuse. Their lifespan is in the 12 to 15 year allotment. The usual lifespan is about 11 years, and it’s 2 years less than similar-sized purebred dogs. Unfortunately for pet owners, they don’t live forever. Their docile, acquiescing, beautiful, and sweet nature is hard to find in other breeds. Oftentimes, they urinate when they get too excited, and it’s not a parlor trick. Good breeders know how to eliminate some negative attributes that have resulted from hasty and heady breeding in recent years. They’re extremely popular in multiple arenas: the home, the show, and hunting. Therefore, they’re well received in most circles, and all breeders, of whatever specialty, are familiar with them. If only because of the movies and shows that feature the dog, they’re well loved and widely known. Their image has been disseminated frequently over the years. Lady from Lady and the Tramp is most often cited for her particular characterization and fictitious portrayal of the American Cocker Spaniel temperament. It’s sometimes cited as a cocker due to its woodcock hunting proficiency and technique in England. They originally hailed from across the Atlantic Ocean, and their popularity is very strong in both countries today.
The American Cocker Spaniel has the epitome of pitiful puppy eyes. Their pendulous, drooping, hairy ears and beautiful eyes are quintessentially cute. Their precious globular eyes do lend merit and charm to the phrase, “puppy dog eyes”. Be careful because they can be prone to glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal disorders like retinal atrophy. They can get autoimmune disorders too.
There are few family dogs more geared toward home life and universal family appreciation and admiration. Their gentle nature and innately docile temperament make them great pets. They’re mighty good and eager to please too.
