The breed was produced to have a more exaggerated head with a great dome and flatter face, possibly from the Pug, though it is uncertain. Thus the breed appeared after crossing of the King Charles and the Cocker Spaniel. These were favorite hounds of the aristocracy in the early nineteenth century.

Later the popularity of the breed lessened and the place of these dogs took the Pug. As the dog shows became popular dog breed standards appeared. The model for the first breed Standards was a dog called Ann's Son and in 1945 the breed was registered as a separate breed.
