The breed is descended from the small Toy Spaniels that were depicted in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth century paintings by Titan, Van Dyck, Lely, Stubbs, Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Romney. There were small dogs shown that had flat heads, high set ears and almond eyes.

The dogs were used as ladies' pets during Tudor times. During the Stuarts reign the dogs were given the royal title of King Charles Spaniels. The history of the breed is very interesting. Thus King Charles II wrote a decree that the King Charles spaniel should be accepted in any public place, even in the Houses of Parliament.
