Himalayans were bred in the 1950s by breeding Siamese with Persians. First, two alternate Siamese-Persian pairs were picked up, both of which produced black Persians of different sexes, both carrying the Siamese gene. The crossbreeding of the two offsprings resulted in the appearance of another black Persian.

This species was later crossed with her father, and this mating produced the first Himalayan. The new animal featured Persian long hair, flat muzzle, and the Siamese-type pointed color pattern and blue eyes. In the 1980s, the CFA merged this breed with Persians.
