There are two varieties of the breed that were thought to be different about 70 years ago. The both may be descended form Swedish Vallhunds brought to Wales in the 800's by Vikings. Perhaps the one of the varieties is the older variety, and was brought to Wales by the Celts in about 1200 BC.

The name of the breed comes from the Celtic word for dog. The breed was mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) and developed in Cardiganshire Wales. This breed is an excellent cattle driver, vermin hunter and farm guard. The dogs used to bark and nip the cattle’s heals and thus they drove the cattle.
