Once foxes had been introduced onto the islands, the population of the species plummeted rapidly. In the second half of the 20th century, the species was considered extinct and was placed on the Endangered Species List. Efforts were applied to breed the birds in captivity.

Common misspellings are Canadian Goose, Canadian Geese..
However, in 1962 there were found a small population of these birds at remote areas. Recovery program was launched to re-establish the population of the species and turned very successful.
