The ancestors of these dogs were very popular in the times of bull-baiting, which was banned in 1835. After that, the breed’s popularity plunged, and there was a threat of extinction. Later, breeders selected against violence without stopping to boost the dog’s physical characteristic. Eventually, breeders came up with dogs, that were a little menacing in appearance, but absolutely inoffensive in temperament. Modern species are very convivial, people-oriented and affectionate, and they can be excellent companions for children and elderly people. They don’t mind the presence of other pets in the house.
