These dogs have powerful and heavy-boned legs. Their front legs are set much wider than their hind legs, and this provides for a very steadfast standing. These dogs occur in fawn, brindle, white and piebald, and they have smooth and short coat, which does not require much grooming. The dogs have strong and compact body, deep and broad chest and muscular legs. They feature distinctive Mastiff-type wrinkled muzzles and characteristic undershot lower mandibles. Modern species are smaller in size than their ancestors, and they are absolutely not vicious or aggressive.
