The first record of this breed dates back to the 13th century when bull baiting was a very popular sport. It took a particular effort to train a courageous animal almost unaware of pain. Breeding these fierce fighters was a very profitable business; the dogs were bred for ferocity and tenacity. They were absolutely different from the gentle and friendly pets we know today. The specialization of the breed has made it almost useless when bull baiting was outlawed. Only thanks to the efforts of breed fanciers, these dogs were preserved up to nowadays.

As a matter of fact, this breed is an indoor dog. These dogs do better in temperate climates because they can chill easily in cold weather and have trouble cooling off in very hot weather. They should be given regular exercise in order to keep fit. If you have decided to take the dog, you need to choose a responsible breeder first as the dog should have all the necessary papers.
