The predecessors of these dogs were powerful and ferocious enough to kill large bulls and other animals. According to the AKC breed standard, these dogs should stand from 12 to 14 inches at the withers and weigh 50 to 55 pounds. The head of these dogs is very large, with flat forehead, protruding cheeks, and a deep stop. The circumference of the scull in front of the ears should measure the shoulder height of a high quality dog. The muzzle is very short and turned upward.
