These dogs have descended from ancient Mastiffs that originated in Asia. They were brought to Europe by nomads and were used as working dogs. The ancestors of the present-day dogs were bred for ferocity and bringing down aggressive bulls. They were also used to bring down, fight or hold large aggressive prey such as wild boars, bears or big cats. This breed became widely spread when bull baiting became popular in Europe. When cruel contests were outlawed the breed survived only thanks to the efforts of the breed fanciers. They selected against ferocity and bred a nice human companion possessing a great strength.

The breed is rather strong and belongs to the class of non-sporting dogs. It is also registered by the ACK as a non-sporting breed in 1934. The dogs have a short, glossy coat that requires little care and needs only regular brushing. Selective breeding has changed the dog's appearance extremely. This breed has a number of physical traits that are detrimental to the dog's health. For instance, because of a short muzzle these dogs suffer from breathing difficulties.
