Many features of these dogs are much exaggerated, which makes the breed the acme of canine breeding. Everything in the breed was designed for bull baiting; some characteristics are preserved up to nowadays, though working abilities of the breed are no longer important. The hallmarks of the breed are a large head with extremely short muzzle and very strong jaws. The eyes of the Bulldog are small and situated low down in the scull; the nose is broad and set back deeply between the eyes. Bulldogs stand between 12 and 14 inches at the withers, but their weight can vary from 50 to 55 pounds. The general appearance of these dogs suggests vigor, stability and great strength.

Bulldogs are very people-oriented and easy-going, and they are good with children. They do not exhibit aggression or viciousness toward people, although two males can fight for dominance. These pets are very convivial and affectionate, and they have nothing in common with their old predecessors in terms of temperament. Bull baiting was prohibited in 1835, and since then breeders have been working toward elimination of viciousness and aggression from the breed.
