The exact time of the breed's origin is not known, but its ancestors are the breeds of mastiff type: the Bullenbeiszer and the Barenbeiszer. Up to the beginning of the 20th century breeding of these creatures was indiscriminate, but in 1904 the studbook and breed standard appeared. Early representatives of the breed were very ferocious, as their aim was bull baiting, big game hunting, and guarding the property. Today, this bred is very loving and gentle companions. These animals are intelligent and devoted to the owner.
