These are muscular, short-coated, square-headed canines. Males stand 22.5-25 inches at the withers and weigh about 70 pounds. Females are a bit smaller at 21-23.5 inches and about 60 pounds. These dogs will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. They need a lot of attention from their owners. Early socialization and firm consistent training is a must for this breed; otherwise these pets may become dominating and stubborn. This breed is very versatile; it makes wonderful family pets and guardians, guides for the blind and therapy animals for disabled. They are also used in military and police work.
