This dog is believed to have appeared after crossbreeding of the Brabanter and Bullenbeisser with the English Bulldog in the 19th century. It was widely used in police and military work in the first half of the 20th century. Initially, it was a rather aggressive dog, but breeders gradually eliminated its hard temperament. Nowadays, this is one of the funniest breeds of dogs in the world. They have a wonderful manner of toying with things, using their front paws. This manner earned the breed its current name.

This breed is not for novice owner, as it requires a firm hand and early training to become reliable and good-natured. If the owner has to stay away from home all day long, he/she would better consider another breed. These animals like to be around people; they should be walked and exercised at least twice a day. Mental and physical stimulation is absolutely imperative with this breed to keep fit. These dogs usually do well in obedience training and have an ever-burning desire to learn new tricks.
