This breed developed from the mastiff-type breeds: the Bullenbeiszer and the Barenbeiszer. These creatures were praised for their strength and courage; they were used for bull baiting, cattle herding and guarding, hunting big game and pulling carts. Due to its intelligence the breed was popular in circuses and theaters. Breeding of these animals was indiscriminate up to the 20th century when the studbook and breed standard appeared. The first breed club was founded in 1895 in Munich. The breed came to the USA in the beginning of the 20th century and began to gain in popularity quickly. The breed is of German origin, but it has an English name.
