These are muscular, short-coated, square-headed dogs with tight skin and a docked tail. Some of the characteristic physical features of these dogs are the broad nose, pushed-in top of the muzzle, and the compact and muscular body. These dogs are happy, high-spirited, intelligent, energetic, curious, faithful, and affectionate. They are very reliable and protective around children. These dogs are easily trained and are often eager to learn. They usually make wonderful family pets and companions.

These large dogs need much exercise to stay in shape and satisfy their nature, but on the other hand, they are not outdoor dogs, because they cannot stand fluctuations of temperature and humidity. Living in an apartment and having daily walks with much mental and physical stimulation is ideal for them. If the owner cannot provide the pet with enough exercise and training, it may become disobedient, aggressive and lazy. The short coat of this breed requires minimal grooming.
